Chapter IV№ 001

Etiquette · An In-Depth Look

The Buyers
Guide.

The Birkin comes in four canonical sizes — 25, 30, 35 and 40 — each with its own functional grammar. A measured look at acquisition, materials and the unwritten code.

The four sizes.

25

Petit Birkin

Evening · quick lunch · most coveted today

The smallest size in the family, lately the most sought-after thanks to the mini-bag revival. Compact, often described as 'cute', and still large enough for true essentials.

30

Le Classique

Everyday · the canonical size

Sought-after and considered an excellent investment precisely because it sits outside trend cycles. Practical and unmistakably Birkin.

$20,000 — $30,000
35

Le Grand

Generous · a working bag

More volume for those who carry more — and still entirely Birkin. Often priced just under the 30, though variable.

40

Le Voyage

Weekend · travel

The most voluminous version — 40 cm wide — large enough for a short trip. Older models in well-loved condition can be found for far less.

$10,000 — $15,000 (vintage)

Styles & materials

From Barenia
to Himalaya.

Hermès offers an immaculate selection of leathers — from smooth vintage Barenia and resilient Epsom to highly sensitive exotic skins. The most expensive Birkin sold at Sotheby's was a Himalaya 30 with diamonds, at $450,000.

Himalaya Birkins without diamonds routinely trade between $100,000 and $250,000+. Ostrich is less courted than crocodile or alligator and can be found at prices closer to leather, depending on condition, colour and size.

The acquisition

The unwritten
protocol.

  1. I

    Build a relationship

One cannot simply walk in and purchase a Birkin. Become a regular client of a boutique — a course of years, not weeks.

  2. II

    Establish a profile

Cultivate a record of purchases across categories — scarves, shoes, ready-to-wear, home — well before any leather is offered.

  3. III

    Accept what is offered

Even with a profile, the exact size, leather, colour and hardware of one's preference are never guaranteed.

  4. IV

    Consider the secondary market

Trusted resellers and consignment houses access boutique-fresh bags. Pre-loved often offers more leathers, colours and sizes — at a premium to list.

In closing

For many, it is
truly an investment piece.

The price may be hefty, but quality triumphs quantity — and a Birkin, well-chosen, will tend to retain its value extraordinarily well across the long run.
